Sealing materials

 Sealing materials are used to prevent or reduce leakage of liquid or gas through gaps between parts. Sealing materials prevent leakage of lubricants and power fluids from mechanisms into the environment and protect mechanisms from dust and moisture. It is necessary to use sealing materials because even after meticulous machining there will be gaps between parts at the points of their junction. Sealing materials are divided into two groups: fixed sealing devices (for fixed contact between parts) and contact sealing devices (which allow parts to make various movements, such as axial displacement, rotation or complex movement).

Modern materials used to manufacture seals can be used in all branches of industry. When choosing a sealing material, it is necessary to take into account a number of factors: the operating medium, the nominal pressure, the operating temperature, compatibility between the sealing material and the material of the surface. Sealing materials should also be resilient, resistant to the medium they operate in, corrosion-resistant, and they should preserve their physical properties at the operating temperature of the medium.

Our PTFE sealing materials have become one of the most popular sealing materials. Fluoropolymers have an excellent resistance to acids, solvents, oils, and alkalis (except for alkali metals). They have a wide range of operating temperatures from -269 °C to +260 °C, are inert, rather strong, and resistant to water vapour, as well as to climatic and bacterial exposure. They also have excellent dielectric, anti-friction and anti-adhesive properties.

Currently, PTFE sealing materials are growing in use. This is largely due to the fact that they are more durable compared to rubber, have a lower coefficient of friction and higher wearing capacity and can operate at pressures of up to 40 MPa (400 kgf/cm2).

PTFE in the form of shavings or rings is used for sealing in corrosive mediums. These shavings or rings are lubricated with mixtures of graphite, paraffin and oil and are used at temperatures ranging from -250 °C to +200 °C and a pressure of up to 5 MPa. Fluoropolymers can withstand pressures of up to 30-40 MPa if some particular types of rings that do not allow creep are used.

As they have low elasticity, fluoropolymers are combined with additional elastic elements (such as rubber or springs) at low pressures. PTFE cords are used in sealing glands at temperatures ranging from -60 °C to +150 °C and a pressure of up to 6.4 MPa.

We offer a wide range of PTFE sealing materials:

  • Poroflex PTFE cord – this product is chemically resistant and self-lubricating. It is meant for padding and sealing and it has been designed for application in pump and compressor units, as well as in valves and pipelines.

  • PTFE pipes – these pipes are used to manufacture sealing parts in contact with corrosive mediums.

  • PTFE thread seal tape – this product is meant for sealing threaded connections of industrial pipelines (including plumbing equipment). It can also be applied to seal threaded connections in equipment used in the food, chemical, construction and other industries on condition that the pressure is lower than 9.8 MPa.

  • F-4DP PTFE porous tape – this product is used as a sealing material in threaded connections and complex connections of flat flanges.

  • FUM PTFE sealing material – this material is used to seal various types of threaded and flanged connections and to seal equipment units in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
